In-Depth Information
Via Roma eventually becomes Corso Vittoria Colonna and heads southeast to Ischia
Porto.
FERRY FACTS
Ferries are the most likely way of getting to the islands. Note that ferries departing from Positano and
Amalfi operate solely from Easter to September. At other times of the year, you will have to catch the
ferry or hydrofoil from Naples or Sorrento. The information listed in the Getting There & Away sec-
tions of this chapter refers to high-season crossings and is not comprehensive; check the respective
websites and the Transport section in the Survival Guide in the back of the topic for more detailed itin-
eraries. Ferries leave from both the Beverello and adjacent Mergellina ports in Naples; there is a strip
of booths with the times, berth numbers and costs clearly displayed. Generally, there is no need to
book in advance. Just turn up around 35 minutes before departure in case there is a queue.
Bus
The island's main bus station is located in Ischia Porto. There are two principal lines: the
CS (Circolo Sinistro, or Left Circle), which circles the island anticlockwise, and the CD
line (Circolo Destro, or Right Circle), which travels in a clockwise direction, passing
through each town and departing every 30 minutes. Buses pass near all hotels and camp-
sites. A single ticket, valid for 90 minutes, costs €1.40; an all-day, multi-use ticket is
€4.50; and a two-day ticket is €7. Taxis and micro-taxis (scooter-engined three-wheelers)
are also available.
Car & Scooter
You can do this small island a favour by not bringing your car. If you want to hire a car or
a scooter for a day, there are plenty of hire companies. Balestrieri ( 081 98 56 91;
www.autonoleggiobalestrieri.it ; Via Iasolino 35, Ischia Porto) hires out cars (from €40
per day) and scooters (€30), and they also have mountain bikes (€15 per day). You can't
take a hired vehicle off the island.
Parking
If you are hiring a car in high season, parking is going to be a headache. Go for a Smart
car if you can, which takes up minimal space. There is a small car park at the entrance of
Sant'Angelo (two hours €3) and Ischia Porto and Ponte both have signposted central car
parks (per hour €1.50).
