; Via Roma 29, Ischia Porto; meals €28; Mar-
Nov; )
Handily situated in the middle of Via Roma, this brightly-lit, welcoming place
has few surprises on the menu but prepares everything well. Try the
frittura di pesce
all'ischitana
(mixed fried fish; €13) or
melanzane a funghetti
(fried aubergine with toma-
toes, mushrooms, garlic and basil) and grab a table out front for the best people-watching
potential on this pedestrian shopping street.
Ristorante da Ciccio €€
( 081 99 16 86; Via Luigi Mazzella 32, Ischia Ponte; meals €25; Wed-Mon)
Sublime seafood and charming host Carlo make this atmospheric place a winner. High-
lights include
tubattone
pasta with clams and pecorino cheese, a zesty mussel soup topped
with fried bread and
peperoncino
(chilli), and a delicious chocolate and almond cake.
Tables spill out onto the pavement in the summer, from where there are fabulous castle
views.
CAMPANIAN
Umberto a Mare €€€
( 081 99 71 71; Via Soccorso 2, Forio; meals €46; Mar-Dec)
In the shadow of the
Spanish mission-style Soccorso church, this waterside restaurant has the choice of a low-
key cafe-bar for light snacks or the more formal restaurant where the menu changes ac-
cording to the season. Highlights include long thick tubes of pasta with tuna, fresh toma-
toes and
peperoncino
, pennewith lobster and asparagus, and a delicate
al profumo di
mare
(lightly grilled freshly caught fish). The orange sorbet dessert comes highly recom-
mended.
CAMPANIAN
Da Ciccio €
( 081 199 13 14; Via Porto 1, Ischia Porto; snacks from €1)
Just the spot for ferry-
weary arrivals, this much-loved bar does light meals, luscious pastries and dangerously
good gelati, including organic strawberry - fabulous! Eat in or take away savoury treats
like the
calzone
(pizza folded over to form a pie) stuffed with spinach, pine nuts and rais-
ins (€1.20). At the very least, cool down with an orange and mint
granita
.
