In-Depth Information
More recently, singer Mariah Carey bought a holiday villa here, Liz Hurley was seen shopping for a
wedding dress and Leonardo di Caprio was spotted sipping a coffee at a pavement cafe. It's Holly-
wood stars like this who help keep Capri's reputation alive and its overworked paparazzi in business.

FOUR GREAT CAPRI WALKS
Surprisingly, for such a small place, Capri offers some memorable hiking. A network of well-main-
tained paths weaves its way across the island, leading through areas that even in the height of summer
are all but deserted. The following are four of the most popular and best known walks; the tourist of-
fice can provide you with maps.
Arco Naturale To Punta Dell'arcera
» Distance 1.2km
» Duration 1¼ hours
This walk starts at the Arco Naturale Offline map Google map , a curious eroded limestone arch
which was part of a large grotto. At the end of Via Matermània, backtrack to Le Grottelle ( Click here )
restaurant and take the nearby set of stairs. About halfway down you'll pass the Grotta di Mater-
mània , a giant natural cave used by the Romans as a nymphaeum (shrine to the water nymph). You
can still see traces of the mosaic wall decorated with shells. At the bottom, continue down the path as
it follows the coastline south. The striking flat-roofed red villa you see on your left, on the Punta Mas-
sullo promontory, is Villa Malaparte , the former holiday home of Tuscan writer Curzio Malaparte
(1898-1957). The sea views become increasingly impressive as the path continues westward around
the lower wooded slopes of Monte Tuoro . A few hundred metres further along and you will arrive at
a staircase on your right, which leads up to the Belvedere di Tragara and some stunning views of the
Isole Faraglioni.
