It's not that flashy but the position of the delightful
Caffè Michelangelo, on a street flanked by tasteful shops and located near two lovely
piazzas, makes it a perfect spot for indulging in a little people-watching-cum-cocktail
time. Large cushioned chairs and a raised terrace add to the kick-back appeal.
Shopping
Boasting more designer boutiques per square metre than almost anywhere else on earth,
Capri's shopping scene is conservative and expensive. Along the town's two main strips,
Via Vittorio Emanuele III and Via Camarelle, you'll find most of the fashion big guns as
well as a number of jewellery and shoe shops. If you are looking for souvenirs or gourmet
goodies, lemons reign supreme, pictured on everything from T-shirts to tea cloths. The is-
land is famous for its perfume and
limoncello
. The former smells like lemons and the lat-
ter tastes like sweet lemon vodka.

Grown weary of the
ubiquitous lemon motif? Then this cutting-edge showroom will delight and inspire with
its modern sculptures and objets d'art by Italian artists. The faux abalone pieces are partic-
ularly ingenious, as are the sculpted heads with their bad-hair-day sea sponge bouffant
hairdos in vivid colours sculpted by Paolo Sandulli. You can also visit his workshop in
Praiano.

First
opened in 1906 (yes, that is not a misprint!), and best known for introducing Capri pants
in the 1960s - famously worn by Audrey Hepburn - who bought them from here, La
Parissienne can run you up a made-to-measure pair within a day. They also sell off-the-
hook Capri pants (from €200).
Apparently Clark Gable was another Hollywood star who favoured the fashions here,
particularly the Bermuda shorts, which (believe it or not) were considered quite raffish in
their day.
