5-9.30pm Mon-Fri, 9.30am-2.30pm & 5-11pm Sat; Centrale to Fuga) The stuff of le-
gend, this spartan snack bar makes some of the city's finest fritture (deep-fried snacks).
Crunch away on deep-fried aubergines, potatoes and zeppole (doughnuts), frittatine di
maccheroni (fried pasta and egg) and supplì di riso (rice balls). Located opposite the fu-
nicular, it's a handy pit stop before legging it to the Certosa di San Martino.

This swing-a-cat-sized dining room - there are only nine tables - has an epic reputation
for solid home cooking. Mamma Teresa's photo looks on approvingly as regulars tuck in-
to simple classics like pasta provola e melanzane (pasta with provola cheese and auber-
gines) and salsicce al sugo (sausages with tomato sauce). The menu is limited, changes
daily and pulls in the hordes, so go early.

Cavour, Museo) Made with pepper, almonds and pork fat, oven-baked taralli mandorlati
(savoury almond biscuits) are dangerously addictive and readily available at this heirloom
Sanità bakery. But don't stop at the classic, with moreish variations including buttery tar-
alli (crunchy, ring-shaped biscuits) with friarielli (Neapolitan broccoletti), olio (olive oil)
and lemon glaze . For a more substantial feed, fill up on the scrumptious focaccia.

8.30am-1pm Sat; Piazza Cavour, Museo) Hidden away down a Sanità side street, this
vintage chocolatier has been compromising waistlines since 1890. Aside from a wicked
selection of dark, milk and white chocolate pralines and truffles, you can pick up very
Neapolitan edible souvenirs like giant chocolate lemons and a chocolate caffettiera (cof-
fee percolator), complete with edible tazze (cups).
