citing cities. Begin with a look at Sultanahmet's monumental buildings and historic sites (in
addition to the obvious Byzantine and Ottoman sites, check out the intriguing subterranean
Basilica Cistern ). Next, get a feel for the sheer energy of this booming metropolis, best
experienced on a wander down İstiklal Caddesi and a night in Beyoğlu's rooftop bars and
meyhanes (taverns).

After crossing the Sea of Marmara, spend a night in the first Ottoman capital. In the centre
is a diverting mix of mosques, including Sultan Beyazıt I's 20-dome Ulu Camii , and mar-
kets , where you can buy Bursa's traditional products, shadow puppets and silk, in age-old
caravanserais.
