In-Depth Information
Activities
Turkey offers a wide array of activities, from the hair- raising to the serene. Want to sail
over archaeological remains? Check out a Turkish ski resort? Explore Cappadocia on
horseback? No problem. It's all here.
WALKING
Turkey is excellent for walking, with day walks in scenic areas such as Cappadocia and the
Kaçkar Mountains. In the western Mediterranean, you can walk sections of the waymarked
Lycian Way (509km) and St Paul Trail (500km). Visit www.trekkinginturkey.com and cul-

Activity Zones
» South Aegean Bring your swimsuit to spots such as Bodrum, where operators offer boat trips, diving and water-
skiing.
» Antalya & the Turquoise Coast The western Mediterranean offers the widest array of activities, including sea
kayaking, boat trips, diving, two waymarked walking trails, canyoning, rafting and paragliding.
» Cappadocia Excellent for a half- or full-day hike, with a surreal landscape. There are also white-water rafting op-
portunities, horse riding, and skiing on Erciyes Dağı (Mt Erciyes).
» Eastern Anatolia Head to the eastern wilds, especially the northern part, for serious adrenaline fixes: white-water
rafting, skiing, hiking, snowboarding and snowshoeing.
WATER SPORTS
For divers, Turkey offers a choice of reefs, drop-offs, caves, amphorae and broken pottery
from ancient shipwrecks. The waters are generally calm, with no tides or currents, and vis-
ibility averages a reasonable 20m. Small reef species are prolific, the standard of facilities
is high and there are sites for all levels of proficiency. Top dive spots include Kuşadası, Kaş
and Ayvalık.
Sea kayaking and canoeing are the best ways to experience the Turquoise Coast's breath-
taking scenery and access pristine terrain. You might see flying fish, turtles and even frol-
icking dolphins. Top paddling spots include Kekova and Patara, both on the western Med.
