In-Depth Information
Other directors of note include Semih Kaplanoğlu (Bal), Yılmaz Erdoğan ( Vizontele
and Vizontele Tuuba ), Reha Erdem (Kosmos) and Ferzan Özpetek ( Hamam and Harem
Suare ).
Visual Arts
Turkey has a long tradition of textile- and carpet- making , ebru (paper marbling), calli-
graphy and ceramics, all of which can be glimpsed in bazaars nationwide. İznik became a
centre for tile production from the 16th century, producing the exuberant tiles that adorn
Ottoman-era interiors.
Educated Ottomans were influenced by European-style painting, and in the Republican
era, government-backed academies promoted 'modern' secular art in place of the religious
art of the past. İstanbul galleries ( Click here ) are the best places to see modern Turkish
art.
Dance
Turks are enthusiastic dancers, swivelling their hips and shaking their shoulders in ways
entirely different from Western styles. Turkey's folk dances include Anatolian halay, led
by a handkerchief-waving dancer and often seen in İstanbul meyhanes; and the Black Sea
region's horon, which involves dramatic Cossack-style kicking.
The sema (whirling dervish ceremony) is not unique to Turkey, but this is a good place
to see it performed. Belly dancing may not have originated here, but Turkish performers,
who you can see at folk shows in İstanbul, reputedly dance with the least inhibition and
the most revealing costumes.
