Folk & Arabesk
Turkish folk ensembles typically consist of
saz,
drums and flutes, producing arrangements
with plaintive vocals and swelling choruses. Big names include the female Kurdish sing-
ers Aynur Doğan and Rojin, whose hit 'Hejaye' has a singalong chorus.
You'll hear skittish
fasıl,
a lightweight version of Ottoman classical, at
meyhanes
(tav-
erns), usually played by gypsies using clarinet,
kanun
(zither),
darbuka
(hourglass-shaped
drum),
ud
(six-stringed Arabic lute) and
keman
(violin). Wandering minstrels play the
zurna
(pipe) and
davul
(drum) in bus stations to send off cadet conscripts.
