Bodrum ( Click here )
Despite its success as an Aegean tourist destination, whitewashed Bodrum has retained its
arty sophistication and charm. In the 1940s, the town overlooked by the 15th-century
Castle of St Peter became a haven for dissidents and intellectuals, writers and artists.
Make a beeline for the castle, with its harbour views and Museum of Underwater Ar-
chaeology . As well as ancient sights such as the Mausoleum (built for a Carian king),
Bodrum offers boat trips, as well as excellent restaurants and nightlife. At the Fish Mar-
ket choose between the catches on the fishmongers' tables and get your pick cooked at a
neighbouring restaurant. For more opportunities to take lingering looks at the coast over
mezes and cold beer, take a day trip to the Bodrum Peninsula . The area's villages,
beaches and bays are the summer playground of Turkey's jet set, and the peninsula's chic
restaurants offer beachfront dining. You can fly back to İstanbul from Bodrum.
