In-Depth Information
During the 1940s and 1950s, the nationalist architecture movement searched for a
homegrown style to honour the new republic, resulting in sturdy edifices such as the
Çanakkale Şehitleri Anıtı (Martyrs' Memorial) on the Gallipoli Peninsula. In recent dec-
ades, Turks have taken more notice of their pre-republic heritage, restoring buildings na-
tionwide, often for use as hotels. For example, Tuvana Hotel, located in Antalya's historic
Kaleiçi quarter, occupies six restored Ottoman houses.
