Settled over millennia by countless civilisations, Turkey
boasts a dizzying array of architectural styles. Crumbling
castles and soaring mosques alike display their creators'
cultural inluences, technical prowess and engineering
techniques. Signiicant buildings and sites range from
Ephesus (Efes), Turkey's pre-eminent example of Roman
city construction, to imperial Ottoman mosques. Re-
cently, a restoration wave has swept the country, adding
sheen to towns such as Safranbolu with its Ottoman
mansions.
