Gulf War Onwards
In 1991 Turkey played a supporting role in the allied invasion of Iraq and, after decades in
the wilderness, affirmed its place in the international community and as an important US
ally. At the end of the Gulf War millions of Iraqi Kurds fled north into southeast Anatolia.
This brought the Kurdish issue into the spotlight, and saw the establishment of a Kurdish
