İstanbul to Ephesus Classic Turkey
This tour of Turkish highlights leads from the great city
of İstanbul across the Sea of Marmara to the north Ae-
gean, where the ruined Roman capital at Ephesus makes
an excellent double bill with the laid-back town of
Selçuk.

Ahh, İstanbul. The former capital of the Byzantine and Ottoman empires is like a country
in itself, with enough size, swagger and diversity to outshine a dozen small nations. Explor-
ing the world-famous sights alone takes a couple of days: the Byzantine splendour of the
Aya Sofya , with its seemingly floating dome; the neighbouring Blue Mosque's voluptu-
ous domes and six minarets; the labyrinthine Harem and glittering Treasury in the Topkapı
Palace ; and the winding lanes of the Grand Bazaar . Leave time to cross between Europe
and Asia on a ferry across the Bosphorus.
İSTANBUL SELÇUK
Three hours Fly to İzmir and catch the train.
Nine hours Ferry to Bandırma, then train or drive.

In this amiable country town, stay in a family-run pension and wander around the historic
core, Ayasuluk Hill . Here you'll find the Basilica of St John , built by order of the Byz-
antine Emperor Justinian, and Ayasuluk Fortress . There's also a Roman aqueduct ; one
of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Temple of Artemis , now a solitary pillar;
and the Ephesus Museum , displaying artefacts from your next stop.
