Getting There & Away
Approaching the summit from the southern side, you pass through Karadut, a village some
12km from the top, before embarking upon the last few kilometres to the car park.
From the southwestern side, a secondary road passes Eski Kale (Arsameia) and climbs
steeply for about 10km until it merges with the Karadut road, some 6km before the car
park at the summit. This secondary road is quite rough in parts, and should only be at-
tempted by confident drivers; it can be bypassed from Kahta by taking the D360 via
Narince.
Be prepared for the rough, steep last 3km up to the summit.
Mardin
0482 / POP 88,000
Mardin is an addictive and unmissable spot. Minarets emerge from a baked brown
labyrinth of meandering lanes, a castle dominates the old city, and stone houses cascade
down the hillside above the Mesopotamian plains. As a melting pot of Kurdish, Yezidi,
Christian and Syrian cultures, it also has a fascinating cultural mix.
With regular flights from İstanbul, you'll see lots of Turkish visitors in summer, and the
government plans to promote Mardin internationally.
