BLACK SEA COAST
Trabzon
0462 / POP 239,700
The Black Sea coast's largest and arguably most sophisticated city, Trabzon mixes cosmo-
politan buzz with, around the harbour, seedy port-town character. Local life is at its most
vivid on Atatürk Alanı, the crazily busy main square in the eastern part of the city centre.
Beeping dolmuşes (minibuses) hurtle around, events bring live music and dance perform-
ances to the square every summer weekend, and local students team headscarves with the
Trabzonspor strip (the idolised local soccer team).
Sights & Activities
Trabzon's main interest is as a base for visiting Sumela Monastery, but if you have some
spare time here, or you are driving west from Trabzon, visit the Aya Sofya Museum (Aya
Sofya Müzesi; 223 3043; www.trabzonmuzesi.gov.tr ; Aya Sofya Sokak; admission " 5; 9am-7pm Jun-
Aug, 9am-6pm Apr-May & Sep-Oct, 8am-5pm Nov-Mar) . Built in the late Byzantine period, between
1238 and 1263, the church has clearly been influenced by Georgian and Seljuk design. It is
signposted uphill from the coastal highway, 4km west of the centre.
