Lake Van
This 3750-sq-km lake ( Click here ) , surrounded by stark Anatolian peaks, is lent further
drama by Akdamar Island. King Gagik Artzruni built a palace, church and monastery on
the island in AD 921, and the remaining church is one of the marvels of Armenian architec-
ture, with masterful relief carvings. Near the lake's eastern shore, the city of Van makes a
pleasant base with nightspots and a craggy ruined castle.
