Sumela Monastery
This striking Greek Orthodox monastery (

, abandoned in 1923, nestles against
the cliffs above a wooded valley. The external views of its improbable location are show-
stealers, but there's also plenty to see inside the complex. The main chapel, cut into the
rock, is the indisputable highlight, covered both inside and outside with colourful frescoes.
The earliest examples date from the 9th century; most are 19th-century work.
