4 MENÜÇER CAMII
This is Anatolia's earliest Turkish mosque, built by the Seljuk Turks between 1064 and
1072. A dedication to Allah is inscribed in Koranic script on the octagonal minaret,
and geometric, mythological and shamanistic symbols are carved in different coloured
stones. It was built on the edge of the ravine, because the city was full of buildings.
5 IÇ KALE
At the southern end of Ani the ground rises to form this flat-topped hill, known as the
'Inner Fortress'. Behind it is the small church Kız Kalesi (Maiden's Castle). You have
to look from a distance: the area is a forbidden military zone.
