Kaçkar Mountains
Rippling along between the Black Sea coast and the Çoruh River, the Kaçkars ( Click here
) rise to almost 4000m, affording superb hiking when the snow melts in summer. The day
walks and longer treks in the yaylalar (mountain pastures) around mountain hamlets like
Olgunlar and Ayder are some of Turkey's top hiking experiences, and the lower slopes of-
fer cultural encounters. The local Hemşin people are welcoming, serving their beloved,
fondue-like muhlama (cornmeal cooked in butter) in villages with Ottoman bridges and
Georgian churches.
