Göreme Open-Air Museum
First an important Byzantine monastic settlement, then a pilgrimage site from the 17th century, this cluster of
fresco-filled rock-cut churches, chapels and monasteries is an easy 1km walk uphill from the centre of Göreme.
Avoid weekends if possible, and arrive early in the morning, at midday or near closing to bypass tour groups.
Your ticket is valid all day if you want to leave and return.
The museum's most famous church, the stunning, fresco-filled Karanlık Kilise (Dark Church), is one of Tur-
key's finest surviving churches and well worth the extra outlay.
Also look out for the 13th-century Çarıklı Kilise (Sandal Church). The footprints marked in the floor represent
the last imprints left by Jesus before he ascended to heaven.
Across the road from the museum, 50m downhill, the 10th-century Tokalı Kilise (Buckle Church) is one of
Göreme's biggest and finest churches, with an underground chapel and fabulous frescoes.
