Afrodisias
Out in the Anatolian boondocks, its 1000-year-old ruins battling with thickets and
brambles, Afrodisias ( Click here ) was once the capital of the Roman province of Caria.
The 270m-long stadium is one of the biggest and best-preserved classical stadiums, with
30,000 seats; from its tunnel, you can imagine the fated exhilaration of gladiators. The on-
site museum exhibits reliefs from the Sebasteion, once a temple to Roman emperors.
