Amasya
As well as a fairy-tale collection of Ottoman mansions, history has given Amasya ( Click
here ) a set of Pontic rock tombs, carved into the wrinkly cliffs overlooking town. Above it
all, Harşena Castle surveys the narrow river valley, completing the perfect setting for Tur-
key's own Romeo and Juliet-style fable about doomed lovers, Ferhat and Sirin. Amasya
was a centre of Islamic study, and numerous Ottoman mosques and medreses (seminaries)
remain.
