Pamukkale's ( Click here ) name, 'Cotton Castle', is a reference to its glistening white
mountain of calcite travertines, brimming with mineral-rich water. Look beyond the fam-
ous formations, however, and you'll see the ruined baths, theatres and temples of Hierapol-
is, a Roman and Byzantine spa city established around 190 BC. Its ruins include the Mar-
tyrium of St Philip the Apostle, an intricate octagonal structure on terrain where St Philip
was supposedly martyred.
