Cappadocia Don't Miss List
BY MUSTAFA DEMIRCI, OWNER OF AYDINLI CAVE HOUSE, GÖREME
1 GÖREME OPEN-AIR MUSEUM
Cappadocia's rocky valleys were an important site for early Christianity. Because it
was easy to carve churches and houses in the soft rock by hand, Christians chose this
area to live and teach safely. Göreme Open-Air Museum ( Click here ) was the heart of
the religious community, and you can still see the rock-carved monastery complex's
many small chapels and beautiful churches, their frescoes painted with natural dye
1000 years ago. Especially in Karanlık Kilise (Dark Church), it's possible to see the
frescoes as they must have looked centuries ago.
2 HOT-AIR BALLOONING
Millions of years ago, Mt Erciyes and Mt Hasan were active volcanoes and their lava
formed tuff, creating Cappadocia's beautiful rock formations. It is really amazing to
see it all spread out beneath a hot-air balloon basket ( Click here ) early in the morning.
3 UNDERGROUND CITIES
From about the 7th to the 12th century, Christian people in Cappadocia were unsafe
because of armies from abroad mounting military attacks. They built hundreds of un-
derground cities ( Click here ) here to hide from their enemies. In some of the cities,
you can go seven or eight levels underground, and they all have churches, kitchens,
wineries, food storage, living rooms and natural air ventilation.
