Sumela Monastery
The improbable cliff-face location of Sumela Monastery ( Click here ) is more than
matched by the surrounding verdant scenery. The gently winding roads to the Byzantine
monastery twist past rustic riverside fish restaurants, and your journey from nearby Tr-
abzon may be pleasantly hindered by a herd of fat-tailed sheep en route to fresh pastures.
The last few kilometres afford tantalising glimpses across pine-covered valleys, and once
inside the rock-cut retreat you will see colourful 9th- to 19th-century frescoes.
