has beautiful calligraphy in the coloured tiles above the windows.

(Truncated Minaret) This stump of a tower marks the ruins of a substantial building that
played many roles: a 2nd-century Roman temple, the 6th-century Byzantine Church of
the Virgin Mary, a mosque three centuries later and a church again in 1361. Fire des-
troyed most of it in the 19th century, but you can see bits of Roman and Byzantine
marble from the outside.

Antalya is an excellent base for excursions to several ancient ruins: the Lycian-Roman-
Byzantine port of Phaselis; the ancient Pisidian mountain city of Termessos; Perge, the
Pamphylian town; Aspendos, with its well-preserved Roman theatre; and Selge, another
ancient mountaintop settlement.
