In-Depth Information
( Uzun Çarşi Sokak)
This 18th-century mosque, repaired extensively in 1886 and 1926,
has beautiful calligraphy in the coloured tiles above the windows.
2 KESIK MINARE
(Truncated Minaret)
This stump of a tower marks the ruins of a substantial building that
played many roles: a 2nd-century Roman temple, the 6th-century Byzantine Church of
the Virgin Mary, a mosque three centuries later and a church again in 1361. Fire des-
troyed most of it in the 19th century, but you can see bits of Roman and Byzantine
marble from the outside.
3 SEFA HAMAMI
9.30am-10pm)
This atmospheric hamam retains much of its 13th-century Seljuk architec-
ture.
4 HIDIRLIK KALESI
( Kaleiçi)
This 14m-high tower may once have served as a lighthouse in the 2nd century
AD.
