Detour:
Xanthos
The Teke peninsula is the former Lycia, home of the ancient civilisation that, after gaining independence from Rome
in 168 BC, established the Lycian League. This loose confederation of 23 city-states is often cited as history's first
proto-democratic union.
Of the many Lycian ruins scattering the area's hillsides and shorelines, Xanthos (admission " 5;
9am-7pm
May-Oct, 8am-5pm Nov-Apr) is one of the most notable, featuring on Unesco's World Heritage List.
Up on a rock outcrop at Kınık, 63km southeast of Fethiye, Xanthos was the capital and grandest city of Lycia,
with a fine Roman theatre and pillar tombs .
You'll see the Roman theatre with the agora opposite the car park, but the acropolis is badly ruined. Follow the
path in front of the ticket office to the east along the colonnaded street to find excellent mosaics , the attractive
Dancers' Sarcophagus and Lion Sarcophagus, as well as some excellent rock tombs .
Minibuses run roughly hourly from Fethiye ( " 8, one hour), and buses may stop along the nearby highway if you
ask.
