Getting There & Away
Buses on the Fethiye-Kaş route drop you on the highway 4km from the village. From
here dolmuşes (minibuses) run to the village every 30 to 40 minutes.
In season, minibuses depart from the beach via Gelemiş to Fethiye ( " 12, 1½ hours) and
Kaş ( " 10, 45 minutes).

Kayaköy
About nine kilometres south of Fethiye is Kayaköy (admission " 5, free after closing; 8.30am-6.30pm
May-Oct, 8am-5pm Nov-Apr) , ancient Karmylassos, an eerie ghost town of 4000-odd abandoned stone houses.
They once made up the Greek town of Levissi, and today form a memorial to cross-Aegean peace and cooperation.
Levissi was deserted during the population exchange ( Click here ), and damaged by an earthquake in 1957. It
was the inspiration for Eskibahçe, the setting of Louis de Bernières' novel, Birds Without Wings .
The timeless village is set in a lush valley with some fine vineyards nearby. The Kataponagia and Taxiarkis
churches retain some of their painted decoration and black-and-white pebble mosaic floors.
From Ölüdeniz/Hisarönü, Kayaköy is a pretty 8km/one-hour walk.
You can get a good lunch at Cin Bal ( 618 0066; www.cinbal.com ; mains " 15-20) , the region's most cel-
ebrated grill restaurant; or İstanbul Restaurant ( 618 0148; mains " 15-25; 8am-midnight) , serving
grills and meze made from the produce of the surrounding vegetable gardens and orchards.
Minibuses link Kayaköy with Fethiye ( " 4, 20 minutes) and Hisarönü (for Ölüdeniz; " 2, 15 minutes). A taxi to
Fethiye/Hisarönü costs " 35/18.
Kaş

Kaş may not sport the region's finest beaches, but it's a yachties' haven and the town's at-
mosphere is wonderfully mellow. The surrounding areas are ideal for day trips by sea or
scooter, and a plethora of adventure sports are on offer, including some excellent wreck
diving.
