There are more ancient ruins across the Teke peninsula in (5) Kaş , a laid-back har-
bourside town where one of the Lycians' distinctive tombs stands between whitewashed
fish restaurants in the pretty backstreets. Surrounded by beaches, Kaş is an excellent base
for activities including wreck diving, sea kayaking and boat trips to Kekova island, where
you can see the underwater ruins of a Lycian city.
KAŞ TO ÖLÜDENIZ Turquoise Coast
Even by Mediterranean standards, (1) Kaş is a supercharged activity centre. Come to this
deceptively mellow seaside spot for everything from walking the Lycian Way to PADI
open-water diving courses, canyoning and mountain biking.
Next, beach-hop up the Teke peninsula, stopping at exquisite (2) Kaputaş , with its
dazzling turquoise shallows, and (3) Patara , Turkey's longest beach. Patara's 18km of
sands are backed by ancient ruins including the bouleuterion, the 'parliament' where the
Lycian League met. You can learn more about the league at (4) Xanthos , the evocative
remains of Lycia's grandest city.
Next, follow in James Bond's footsteps to (5) Fethiye , nestling in an island-dotted bay
that featured in the movie Skyfall . Overlooked by a Roman theatre and rock-cut tombs,
Fethiye's natural harbour is a springboard for gület cruises and boat trips.
A land-based day trip leads to the ghost town (6) Kayaköy , whose stone houses and
churches were abandoned in the early 1920s. From there, a pretty 8km walking trail winds
to stunning (7) Ölüdeniz , where you can paraglide from Baba Dağ (Mt Baba) down to
the beach and lagoon.
