Pergamum (Bergama)
In the hills above this unassuming north Aegean town are the ruins of the Asclepion ( Click
here ) , ancient Rome's pre-eminent medical centre, and the acropolis, with its dramatic
Greek theatre. A cable car now climbs to the acropolis from near the ruined Red Basilica,
where the Byzantines built a basilica inside the hulking temple to Egyptian gods. Bergama
can be visited in a day from Ayvalık or İzmir; alternatively, overnight in an atmospheric
boutique hotel and watch life slope along in this low-key town.
