Antalya & the Mediterranean Coast
Turkey's western Mediterranean coast, known as the Turquoise Coast or Turkish Riviera, is
a region of endless azure sea, sandy beaches and mountains rising up to almost 3000m.
Add to that a surfeit of ancient ruins strewn through the aromatic scrub, pine forests, and
plenty of sports and activities, and you've hit Mediterranean pay dirt.
Dramatic ways to see this stretch of coastline include skimming through the crystal waters
on a boat trip or a gület (traditional wooden yacht) cruise; and walking a section of the Ly-
cian Way, high above what the Turks call the Akdeniz (literally, 'White Sea').
Beyond Antalya, the eastern Mediterranean coast offers a less razzle-dazzle glimpse of
'real' Turkey. Enormous vegetable farms and fruit orchards are worked overtime between
the mountains and coastline, and here you'll meet modern, secular and friendly locals, and
see historic sights from castles to caves.
