Castle of St Peter
The Knights Hospitaller, based in Rhodes, built this Bodrum castle using marble and stones from the famed Mauso-
leum, completing it in 1437. When Süleyman the Magnificent captured Rhodes in 1522, the Knights were forced to
cede the castle, and the Ottomans promptly built a mosque in it.
The
Museum of Underwater Archaeology
has antiquities, reconstructions and multimedia displays, and the bat-
tlements offer splendid views. Heading in, you'll pass a carved marble
Crusader coats of arms
. Next is the
castle's main court, an
amphorae collection
and
glass-blowing workshop
.
A reconstruction of a late-Roman ship's stern discovered off Yassıada is displayed in the chapel. Left of here and
up the towers is the
Glass Wreck Hall
, housing a ship that sank in 1025, while carrying three tonnes of glass. The
French Tower
has finds from the world's only fully excavated Classical Greek shipwreck.
The
Carian Princess Hall
exhibits a gold crown and other jewellery, popularly associated with a 4th-century BC
Carian queen.
The
English Tower
, built during the reign of King Henry IV of England (1399-1413), was a show of solidarity
with the Byzantines against the Muslim Turks.
