Were it not for nearby Ephesus, Selçuk might be just another provincial Turkish town; that
said, it does have more than the usual number of attractions, from graceful Roman aque-
duct Offline map Google map ruins to one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
Like all small places catering to short-term visitors, there's plenty of competition,
which can result in both good deals and less-welcome pressure. Yet all in all, Selçuk re-
mains a likeable, down-to-earth town, and a good base for regional adventures.

TEMPLE OF ARTEMIS

(Artemis Tapınağı; 8.30am-5.30pm) Just beyond Selçuk's western extremities, in an empty
field, stands a solitary reconstructed pillar: all that remains of the massive Temple of
Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
A sign of the great love and attachment Ephesians felt for their fertility avatar, the
structure had 127 columns at its height. You can get a sense of this grandeur by visiting
Didyma's better-preserved Temple of Apollo ( Click here ) , which had 122 columns.
