The road from Mary's House to Ephesus passes a turn-off to this cave, where seven
persecuted Christians legendarily slumbered for centuries, awaking to find churches in
previously pagan Ephesus. The area became a Byzantine pilgrimage site, and the nec-
ropolis has many rock-carved graves. Walk 200m from the car park (1.5km from
Ephesus) to see the tombs, following the hill path. Although the grotto itself is fenced
off, a large hole in the fence allows entry.
