Ruins
Ephesus was once a major city and the classical ruins spill well beyond the boundaries
of today's archaeological site. Indeed, it's worth looking out for new surprises outside
the Lower Gate, where archaeologists continue to dig; in 2007 a gladiator's cemetery
was discovered near the Stadium. A little further from Ephesus are two intriguing sites,
visited by most Ephesus tours (though check in advance).
1 MARY'S HOUSE
(Meryemana; 894 1012; admission per person/car " 12.50/5; 8am-7pm May-Oct, to 4.30pm Nov-
Apr) Legend has long attested that St John brought the Virgin Mary to Ephesus and, in
1881, a French priest claimed this was her house. Atop these ruined, mostly 6th-cen-
tury AD house foundations, a chapel has been built; everything beneath the pale red
line on its exterior is from the original foundation. The site is 7km from Ephesus' Up-
per Gate (8.5km from the Lower Gate). Taxis cost " 50 return from Selçuk's otogar (bus
station).
