In-Depth Information
BODRUM TO BOZBURUN PENINSULA Peninsula
Perambulator
Get off to a stylish start in blue-and-white (1) Bodrum , where the Crusader castle over-
looks twin bays and a well-oiled holiday machine. The former haven for dissidents, intel-
lectuals, writers and artists offers highbrow attractions, such as boutique hotels and slick
bars. Between the beaches, cruises and seafood in the fish market, try to fit in a day trip
west to the (2) Bodrum Peninsula's beaches and villages.
Next, head east along the Gulf of Gökova, or board a ferry in Bodrum and set sail
across the gulf to the mountainous back country, secluded coves and hidden archipelagos
of the (3) Datça Peninsula . Eski Datça is an ideal base, its cobbled streets and stone Ot-
toman houses close to Knidos, the ruined 5th-century BC Dorian port city. From Datça
town, you can go on diving trips and gület (traditional wooden yacht) cruises to the Greek
island of Symi.
If time allows, detour down the adjoining, and similarly rugged, (4) Bozburun Penin-
sula . Bozburun town has idyllic bays and brilliantly blue waters for swimming.
EPHESUS TO DILEK PENINSULA Beaches & Ruins
Stroll down the Curetes Way, following in Anthony and Cleopatra's footsteps, through
Europe's greatest ruined classical city: (1) Ephesus , once the capital of the Roman
province of Asia Minor. Relax after touring the ruins in low-key (2) Selçuk , where you
can power up on Selçuk köfte (meatballs) and poke around more ancient relics. These in-
clude the Byzantine Basilica of St John, built to honour John's visits to Ephesus, and Ay-
asuluk Fortress.
Detour into the hills and spend a night in (3) Şirince , a beautifully preserved stone-
and- stucco Greek village with boutique hotels for appreciating the country quiet. Next,
the coastal holiday town of (4) Kuşadaşı makes an unrefined but handy base for a range
of activities. Splash into the Aegean waters on a scuba-diving trip or, if children are in
tow, at beaches and water parks. Next, take another look at the region's classical ruins on
a 'PMD' day trip (also run from Selçuk) to (5) Priene , (6) Miletus and (7) Didyma , re-
spectively former port cities and a temple to Apollo.
Finish with a day trip along the (8) Dilek Peninsula , where you can mix mountain
walks with swimming in azure coves, all with views of the Greek island of Samos.
