Miletus
Before its harbour silted up, Miletus ( Click here ) was a great port city and a centre of
Greek thought and culture. The Milesian School of philosophers were essentially history's
first scientists, favouring observation of nature and rational discourse. The mixed
Hellenistic-Roman architecture includes the 15,000-seat Great Theatre and the Baths of
Faustina, constructed for Marcus Aurelius' wife. Miletus Museum exhibits exquisite gold
pendants, necklaces and rings from ancient tombs.
