1 LIBRARY OF CELSUS
This library is both a cultural building and a funerary monument. After the death of
Celsus Polemaeanus, who had been appointed governor of Ephesus, his son erected the
magnificent reading room over his tomb. The facade has a converse curve, which in-
creases its monumental appearance - an effect that was previously thought to have ex-
isted only in Greek architecture.
2 TERRACED HOUSES
This affluent district ( Click here ) enjoyed its peak between the 2nd and 4th centuries
AD. Wealthy citizens and priests of noble lineage occupied the one-storey houses,
which had spacious rooms grouped around an open-air courtyard. The Ephesus Mu-
seum in Selçuk has a collection of murals, furniture and utensils from the houses.
3 GREAT THEATRE
This theatre ( Click here ) , built against the slope of Mt Panayır, was one of the Ae-
gean's largest, measuring 60m from the stage to the top of the galleries. The auditori-
um held 24,000 spectators, with another thousand in the vaulted galleries, and the stage
facade was adorned with niches, columns, reliefs and statues.
4 ROMAN BOURSE
The Byzantine Church of the Virgin Mary, previously a Roman commercial building,
