KONAK MEYDANI
On a pedestrianised stretch of Cumhuriyet Bulvarı, this wide plaza, named after the Otto-
man
hükümet konağı
(government mansion), pretty much marks the heart of the city;
signs pointing to the centre simply say 'Konak'.

AGORA
(Agora Caddesi; admission
"
8; 8.30am-7pm, to 5.30pm Sat; )
The ancient agora, built for Al-
exander the Great, was ruined in an earthquake in AD 178, but rebuilt soon after by the
Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius. Colonnades of reconstructed Corinthian columns, vaul-
ted chambers and arches give you a good idea of what a Roman bazaar must have looked
like. Later, a Muslim cemetery was built on the site and many of the old tombstones can
be seen around the perimeter of the agora. The site is entered on the south side, just off
Gazi Osman Paşa Bulvarı.

KEMERALTI BAZAAR
( 8am-5pm)
İzmir's Kemeraltı Bazaar is the city's heart and soul, and a great place to get
lost for a few hours. There are bargains galore, especially leather goods, clothing and jew-
ellery. Seek out the flower and bead markets, then stop for a reviving shot of Turkish cof-
fee in one of the delightful cafes at its core.
Anafartalar Caddesi rings the main bazaar area and is its principal thoroughfare.
