Getting There & Around
In summer, there's a shuttle service throughout the day between Behramkale and Assos
( " 1, every 30 minutes); in winter, there are occasional dolmuşes ( " 8). Regular buses run
from Çanakkale ( " 12, 1½ hours) to Ayvacık, where you can pick up a dolmuş/taxi to
Behramkale ( " 30, 20 minutes).

Ayvalık is an attractive, work-a-day fishing town with a secret. The palm-tree-lined water-
front, nearby beaches and smattering of fish restaurants are much like elsewhere on the
Aegean, but wander a few streets back to find an old Greek village in spirited abandon.
Colourful, shuttered doors conceal cafes and craft stores, time lapses in the afternoon sun
and visitors slow down in the languid atmosphere.
Olive-oil production is the traditional business around here, and is still thriving, with
lots of shops selling the end product. Ayvalık was affected by the population exchange in

Sights & Activities
There are few specific sights but Ayvalık's old town is a joy to wander around, with its
maze of cobbled streets lined with wonderfully worn-looking Greek houses. You can pick
