Gallipoli & the North Aegean
Turkey's northern Aegean is a dramatic setting for some key historic sights. North of İzmir
- a buzzing, Eurocentric metropolis with an attractive kordon (seafront) - the hilltop ruins
of Bergama and Behramkale are breathtaking sites of antiquity. All around is wild coun-
tryside and refreshingly undeveloped coastline, with quiet Ege Deniz (Aegean Sea)
beaches. Supplement sunbathing with diving in Ayvalık, windsurfing in Alaçatı and cruises
to islands and bays.
The Greek influence in this region is in-escapable. Many towns experienced the great pop-
ulation exchange of the 1920s, and in places like Ayvalık and Bozcaada island, the archi-
tecture, music and food seem like bittersweet echoes from across the horizon.
The beautiful, pine-strewn Gallipoli (Gelibolu) Peninsula, site of bloody WWI battles, is a
hushed and poignant area. On the Anatolian side of the Dardanelles, Antipodean pilgrims
and Turkish students give Çanakkale's nightspots a lively feel.
