In-Depth Information
( Prof Sıddık Sami Onar Caddesi; Beyazıt-Kapalı Çarşı) This local landmark crowns one of
İstanbul's seven hills and dominates the Golden Horn. Though it's not the largest Ottoman
mosque, it is one of the grandest, and retains many of its original külliye (mosque com-
plex) buildings.
Commissioned by Süleyman the Magnificent and designed by the great Mimar Sinan,
the Süleymaniye was the fourth imperial mosque constructed in İstanbul (built between
1550 and 1557). The four minarets with 10 şerefes (balconies) are said to symbolise that
Süleyman was the fourth Osmanlı sultan to rule the city and the 10th sultan after the es-
tablishment of the empire.
