In-Depth Information
The church was not simply a place of worship, and many important ceremonies
happened here: on this ornate floor, Byzantine emperors were crowned. It's a unique
section of flooring, composed of circles of granite, red and green porphyry and verd
antique (serpentine) in a technique called opus sectile (cutting thin sections of coloured
stone to make elaborate inlaid floors).
5 'PRESENTATION' MOSAIC
As you leave the building, be sure to look back to admire this 10th-century scene, in
which the Byzantine emperor Justinian, who built the Aya Sofya, presents the church
to Mary, and Constantine the Great offers her the city.
