Begin your exploration in the so-called Eastern Zone, home to Agrigento's best-preserved temples. From the east-
ern ticket office, a short walk leads to the 5th-century BC Tempio di Hera (Temple of Hera, aka Juno),
perched on the ridgetop. Though partly destroyed by an earthquake, the colonnade remains largely intact as does a
long sacrificial altar. Traces of red are the result of fire damage likely dating to the Carthaginian invasion of 406
BC.
Next descend past a gnarled 800-year-old olive tree and a series of Byzantine tombs to the Tempio della
