Getting There & Away
AIR
Catania's airport, Fontanarossa ( 095 723 91 11; www.aeroporto.catania.it ) , is 7km southwest of the
city centre. To get there, take the special Alibus 457 (€1, 30 minutes, half hourly from
5am to midnight) from outside the train station. Etna Transporti/Interbus ( 095 53 03 96;
www.interbus.it ) also runs a regular shuttle from the airport to Taormina (€7.90, 1½ hours, six
to 11 daily). All the main car-hire companies are represented at the airport.
BOAT
The ferry terminal is located southwest of the train station along Via VI Aprile.
TTT Lines ( 095 34 85 86, 800 91 53 65; www.tttlines.it ) runs nightly ferries from Catania to
Naples (seat €38 to €60, cabin per person €52 to €165, 11 hours).
Virtu Ferries ( 095 53 57 11; www.virtuferries.com ) runs direct ferries from Pozzallo (south of
Catania) to Malta (1¾ hours) Friday through Wednesday from May through September;
Thursday service is added from mid-July to August. Fares vary depending on length of
stay in Malta (same-day return €80 to €132, open return €108 to €157 depending on sea-
son). Coach transfer between Catania and Pozzallo (€7 each way) adds 2½ hours to the
journey.
BUS
All intercity buses terminate in the area just north of Catania's train station. AST buses
leave from Piazza Giovanni XXIII; buy tickets at Bar Terminal on the west side of the
square. Interbus/Etna and SAIS leave from a terminal one block further north, with their
ticket offices diagonally across the street on Via d'Amico.
