Ueno, Asakusa, and Yanaka
T HE PARTIAL MODERNIZATION of Tokyo's older quarters to the northeast
has not altered their character and flavor. Although gritty, picturesque
Ueno is home to museums, temples, and a cherry-
filled park. Dotted with religious sites and
traditional restaurants, Asakusa appeals as much
to the hedonist as the Buddhist acolyte. With its
narrow lanes, old wooden houses, craft stores,
sanctuaries, and a mossy cemetery, Yanaka is
the best preserved of the three old districts.
