Top 10 Outdoor Features
! Honkan
$ Heiseikan
The elegant main gallery and
centerpiece of Ueno Park was
designed by Jin Watanabe. It
was built in 1938 in the so-called
“Imperial Crown” style of archi-
tecture. The features are
Japanese, but the building mater-
ials are undeniably Western.
@ Toyokan
The wide open courtyard
in front of the building, audi-
torium, and lounge speak of
contemporary architecture and
planning, whereas its pottery,
burial statues, and broken shards
are of the ancient world.
% Gallery of Horyu-ji
Treasures
The minimalist 1999
design of this gallery
is the work of Yoshio
Taniguchi, whose
overseas projects include
the ground-breaking
Museum of Modern Art
(MOMA) in New York.
^ Shiryokan
Asian artworks and
archeology are housed in
a light, modernist build-

elsewhere within the complex.
£ Hyokeikan
Display, Gallery of
Horyu-ji Treasures
Built in 1909, the Hyokeikan
is a highly prized example of a
Meiji-era Western-style building.
The white stone walls and green
domes of this Important Cultural
Property are impressive.
The Shiryokan is a research
and information center, where
visitors can browse through
archives, books, magazines,
monochrome and color photo-
graphs, and other materials
linked to art history.
& The Black Gate
A rare structure from the
Edo period, the Kuromon is
topped with a heavy hip-and-

and foundation stones are kept
in the rear of the gate, adding
to the air of antiquity.
