Shinjuku
R ESEMBLING AN ALL-PURPOSE CITY , Shinjuku is replete with a large
garden-park, train stations, shopping complexes, and department stores.
Railway lines split the area into two sub-cities. The windy avenues in West
Shinjuku are dominated by offices, stores, and experi-
mental skyscrapers. East Shinjuku is a legacy of the
1960s, when the area's Bohemian quarter attracted
artists, writers, and political activists. Though
cultural features exist on both sides, East Shinjuku
appears more hedonistic, with its neon-illuminated
nightspots and a sprawling red-light district.
