statements remains, but there is greater flexibility now regarding the information
that can be included in the statements. The requirements for the scope of the initial
environmental review and the auditing procedure have also been made less prescrip-
tive.
The main advantage offered by these formalized EMS standards is that a company
can follow a customized set of procedures to set up their EMS and, if successful, gain
accreditation, which can then be used to enhance public image, impress stakehold-
ers and increase competitiveness (CTC, 2000). It has been suggested that achieving
registered status in this manner may also improve a company's standing with envi-
ronmental regulators and could pave the way for a certain amount of deregulation,
although such developments are still at the exploratory stage (ENDS, 2001a). Used
as evidence that a company is serious about environmental management and reduc-
ing its environmental liabilities, a certified EMS can result in more favourable con-
sideration for loans and insurance (Howes et al, 1997; Sheldon and Yoxon, 1999).
Certainly, there is evidence that some lending institutions are increasingly influenced
by the environmental, social and ethical policies of companies when determining
loan suitability, the Cooperative Bank being most notable in the UK (Smith, 2000).
Informal systems
Companies interested in establishing an EMS do not have to go down the route of
applying for EMAS or ISO 14001, since they are both voluntary schemes. They may
find it simpler and just as valuable to set up an EMS without any formal accreditation.
